How is printing connected with historical figurines? When you see the word printing, you might think of the electronic system that is connected to your computer at home or in the workplace. But printing has a connection to many of the models and figurines that Whitton customers collect. There are two types of printing that are related to miniature figurines.
The most obvious connection for printing is in the creation of logos, banners and designs. Many models can be enhanced by pristine, accurate decals which are printed onto a medium that is ideal for 54 mm figurines. This printing means that decals can add detail such as a badge, logo or slogan. Of course, not all models use this type of printing, but it is one way that collectors sometimes choose to enhance or personalise their figurines. At Alexander’s Toy Soldiers, we carry out most or all of the detail on our figurines using hand painting techniques. Whereas less experience artists might rely on printing to achieve detail that is well presented, we have the skills to produce fully hand painted figurines.
Another connection between printing and the historical or science fiction figurines that Whitton collectors buy is in 3D printing. Technologies in figurine production have changed. Many years ago, casting models or sculpting in a modeller’s putty were the only options. Whilst these classic techniques are still useful and are options that we use with our figurines, 3D printing has also opened new options for artists who create historical figures. By increasing the range of production options, there is a wider range of ways to achieve the same goal. Of course, at Alexander’s Toy Soldiers, many of our methods are still based upon the tried and tested techniques that have been at the core of accurate model making for generations, and we have been using these methods since we opened in 1997.
