PRIVATE JOHN VAHEY REGIMENTAL No 598 enlisted 1838 he was the regimental butcher for the 17th lancers. on the morning of the 25th of october was slaughtering for the days meals. on hearing of the light brigades charge he rushed to rejoin his regiment ,pausing only to pick up a sword from a dead dragoon. taking his place with his squadron he rode down the vally but his horse was shot from under him before he reached the guns and vahey was pinned under it .when he was released he returned to the start line .
